“Take Drugs” was the name of a single by The Mushroom Club—so right away, we know what kind of mushrooms we’re dealing with.
The Scottish band leans into a sleepy, psychedelic rock sound, with more than a passing nod to shoegaze. Walk Into The Light (P.U.G.) is their latest release, and it’s one that pulls us deep down the rabbit hole.
On the surface, it’s just five tracks—seemingly modest, but the runtime more than makes up for it. The Mushroom Club sink into a soft bed of pleasantly noisy textures and stay there.
The one exception is opener “Superstars,” which flexes a bit of Britpop muscle. The rest of the album is more restrained—though the 22-minute title track does let the noise take over at times. And yes, you’ll need a taste for the repetitive to fully enjoy the ride.
