It doesn’t get much more obvious: Paddang name one of their biggest influences right in the album title. Lost in Lizardland (Stolen Body / Le Cèpe / 98DB) is heavily shaped by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, as well as Thee Oh Sees in their early, rawer days.
Somewhere between trippy garage rock and expansive psych rock, the French trio lands on a scorched, dystopian Earth riddled with deep chasms. After the exuberant opener “Pressence,” “Draconite” pulls us downward into more mysterious territory.
There’s buzz and squeal, then heavy grooves. Tracks like “Moro’s Journey” and “Agartha” build toward epic climaxes, while “The Astral Flood” offers a more laid-back interlude.
A King Gizzard tribute band? Maybe—but so what? It takes a lot to even approximate that signature sound, and Paddang get impressively close.
