You can tell just from the song titles: on their new album III (Howlin Banana / Wita), Gloria are diving deep into mythology. Sonically, though, they don’t reach quite as far back—opting to settle comfortably in the 1960s.
The French band plays a melodic brand of psych rock, subtly weaving in retro elements. It never gets too old-fashioned or too garage-heavy, maintaining a distinctly modern edge.
III is a varied album, bringing mythological figures and stories to life through sound. “Styx,” for instance, flows along with quiet restraint, while “Sirein” spirals into a hypnotic whirlpool.
At times, the album feels a bit ambiguous, occasionally lacking a clear melodic focus. But other moments shine—especially the two-part closing epic, “Harpocrate.” Not flawless, but definitely worth a listen.
