Black Country, New Road have already been through quite a lot in their seven-year band history. After just a few singles, The Quietus crowned them “the best band in the world.” Then came a widely acclaimed debut album. But before the second LP was even released, singer/storyteller/guitarist Isaac Wood left the group.
A major blow—but one the London band managed to recover from surprisingly quickly. They returned to the stage and, in 2023, released Live at Bush Hall, a project that marked a new beginning. Now comes Forever Howlong (Ninja Tune), their true manifesto. Black Country, New Road in 2025—what should we expect?
The sound is notably more folky, playful, and airy. There’s a strong baroque influence, too. Gone is the melodramatic weight of Wood’s plaintive voice. In its place, Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery, and May Kershaw take turns in a rotating trio. The storytelling remains, but the perspective has shifted—feminine, now.
Songs range from two-and-a-half to over six minutes. The structures are often loose, chaotic. Sound fragments swirl, dissolve, and then suddenly resolve into moments of clarity—or even pure silence. It may feel disordered on the surface, but the band has clearly found a new voice.
