Uncertain times call for new sounds. L.A. Witch, previously known for their drifting Western psych, are confronting the chaotic world with a fresh breeze. “DOGGOD“ (Suicide Squeeze) is an album few would have expected from the Californian trio.
The familiar psych rock? Blown away. Instead, a cold wind suddenly sweeps through the desert. The band takes a stoic, unflinching stance. This time, it’s all about post-punk. And jangle pop. Think more R.E.M. than 13th Floor Elevators.
“Icicle” opens with a chiming brightness. Even here, it’s clear: these are a far more melodic L.A. Witch. And that proves true throughout. Only occasionally does the band veer into their reverb-drenched past—like on “Kiss Me Deep.”
“I Hunt You Prey” keeps us lingering next to a simmering bassline for six minutes. No outburst, no hypnotic echo. Then finally, the title track delivers some familiar tones—though tinged with bright synths. But by then, we’ve already come to terms with this new incarnation of L.A. Witch.
