SKLOSS calls it Space Gaze – what can one imagine that to be? Let’s delve into their debut album “The Pattern Speaks” (Fuzz Club) and perhaps we can find out.
First things first: SKLOSS is a project by the married couple Karen Skloss and Sandy Carson. Formed in Austin, they now follow up their promising EP with a full-length album. The EP pulsed and bubbled with psychedelic energy, and so does the LP.
Space Gaze, an apt description indeed. Powerful walls of sound dissipate into impenetrable mists. It churns and stomps, yet it flows into every corner. Essentially, it’s Drone Metal with Psych Rock, if you want to be precise.
It’s gripping and immersive, although not a great deal happens. The title track opens with Neo Psych, which then transitions into the sound that accompanies us throughout the rest of the record. Atmospheric Metal, sometimes with, sometimes without vocals.
Does that sound almost derogatory? It’s not meant to be. SKLOSS delivers an album you can lose yourself in. There are no dull moments, you get delightfully entangled in the repetition.
