The conceptual band Wyatt E., known for their explorations of the Babylonian era, is breaking with old traditions. For their third album, zamāru ultu qereb ziqquratu Part 1 (Heavy Psych Sounds), the band introduces vocals for the first time—mystical vocals, of course.
Nina Saiedi and Tomer Damsky deliver stunning performances on the weighty tracks The Diviner’s Prayer to the Gods of the Night and Im Lelya, respectively. Expansive, hypnotic, and perfectly suited to Wyatt E.’s ancient doom style.
The album took two years to complete, and the meticulous attention to detail is evident. Despite this, the record never feels overwrought. Two quintessential Wyatt E. tracks bookend the vocal pieces. Once again, their doom metal is richly textured, gradually building from tentative beginnings to high drama.
A new arsenal of traditional instruments fits seamlessly into the soundscape, while two drummers add depth. It all comes together beautifully. We eagerly anticipate Part 2.
