Since 2009, The Spyrals have been proudly flying the West Coast psych-rock flag, though the current lineup has only been in place for a few years. Founder Jeff Lewis is now joined by Georgia Feroce (keyboards/bass/vocals) and Dash Borinstein (drums/percussion). Together, the trio explores both the old and the new on their latest album.
RETROGRADE reconnects with the band’s early, garage-influenced Californian sound. Layered onto this is a newfound love for blues and country, a relatively fresh addition to their repertoire. To top it off, the album embraces a broad-strokes indie rock aesthetic. The sound is clean yet carries the marijuana-scented spirit of the 1960s.
“NEW WAR” kicks things off with catchiness and a touch of psychedelia, setting the tone for a series of extended tracks that often evolve into laid-back jams.
“DANGER US” dives into blues, while “DREAM BELIEVIN’” brings a heavier, more forceful vibe. While RETROGRADE doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s an enjoyable rock album with plenty of replay value.
