Goat have been particularly prolific lately. Just a year after “Medicine”, the Swedish band is set to release their next album, “Goat“ (Rocket Recordings). Self-referential from the title down to its core, the album reflects an inward focus.
The band adopts the symbol of the Ouroboros—a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, forming a circle. It represents a self-sustaining entity that feeds off itself.
On this new record, Goat draw heavily from their own past. “Goatbrain” is a direct nod to “Run To Your Mama” from their album “World Music”, while “Frisco Beaver” reworks another track from their debut. They even describe it as an official sequel to “Disco Fever“.
Much will feel familiar to longtime listeners, but there are also new elements to discover. For instance, odd hip-hop grooves appear on the quirky “Zombie”, and breakbeats on the epic closing track “Ouroboros” eventually blend back into Goat’s signature universe.
Overall? It’s a mixed bag. “Medicine” showed how focused and great Goat can be. With “Goat”, we get what feels more like a remix of “World Music”. There are good tracks, but the band’s past efforts have set higher expectations.
