Out of the ashes of Liverpool bands Weird Sex and Ohmns arises YOBS. The quartet is dedicated entirely to raw garage punk. Their self-titled debut album has now been released via Fuzz Club, and it’s definitely worth a listen.
The punk is breakneck and tough, aiming to reflect the high-energy live shows. The album was recorded in a very short time and without much fuss, so that the energy could be captured effectively. And it succeeded.
“YOBS Theme” lays the groundwork as the opener. It’s an assaultive, rumbling garage punk track. As the record progresses, we get variations. Particularly intense is the one-minute blast “Shitty Eye.” “Plastercine,” on the other hand, takes a psychedelic turn.
We oscillate from noise rock to hardcore punk. Crunchy songs stand alongside more complex tracks that allow for tempo changes. Overall, a great punk record.
