Genre conventions don’t concern Obey Cobra much. Industrial, noise, post-punk – why not mix them all together?! The second album, “Mwg Drwg” (Rocket Recordings), continues the sonic experiments of the Cardiff-based band.
Obey Cobra manages to be simultaneously atmospheric and loud. Gentle notes are hidden beneath oppressive roiling. After the grand emotions, the massive eruption follows. They present songs that clearly differ from each other yet share a lot in common. Cold and buzzing, that’s something everyone can agree on.
They lean towards hefty punk on “Home Wrecca,” lay down cool electro beats on “Kali Yuga.” Some tracks slip away while others hit their mark directly. Versatile noise from a very intriguing band.
Somehow, the album cover fits quite well. A dark liquid flows into the warm bathroom, slowly seeping into our brainwaves. It makes us go all loopy.
