The quartet behind Parsnip also has other commitments. Stella Rennex, for instance, recently released a great album with The Toads, briefly reunited with Carolyn Hawkins in Smarts. So it’s no wonder that “Behold” (Upset The Rhythm / Anti Fade) comes out a whole five years after their debut album “When the Trees Bear Fruit.”
The recording process stretched over three years. You can tell from the album. Especially in the first third, the flow gets quite mixed up. The quirky but cheerful “Monument” is followed by more complex songs, like the intricate “Duality.”
What initially feels like a collection of songs comes together in the middle. With “Unearthing,” which is very melodic and takes a bit of Sixties psych with it. The album continues in this style. Beautiful, yearning tracks, showing depth and emotion.
Towards the end, the overall picture shifts again. Nevertheless, we can definitely find four or five great tracks to add to our playlists.
