Heavy garage rock and trippy electronic music go hand in hand. We’ve known that since the early 2000s. Big Mountain County brings us back to this era with their third album, Deep Drives (Sister 9), which is packed with dancefloor fillers and references. Above all, it’s about having a good time.
The story of Big Mountain County begins with that very garage rock sound, inspired by Jon Spencer. Spencer often experimented with beats, and Big Mountain County followed suit.
The band from Rome has clearly evolved over the years, leaning more towards electronic music while still keeping its garage roots intact. This evolution has allowed the incorporation of new genres, including post-punk, dub, and psych rock.
Deep Drives offers plenty for aficionados to discover. Or you can just groove along to the smooth “Don’t Know Why” and the rumbling, laid-back “Bright Black Hole.”
They excel at directness but also master the psychedelic drift. “No Time To Lose” has hit potential, while “Last Call” feels like a masterful exercise. It’s almost time to dust off those old MSTRKRFT records.
