About four years ago, Rhys Llewellyn launched his project, Thee Alcoholics. After some twists and turns, a solid lineup has now formed, and in February, they delivered a wonderfully gritty noise rock album with Feedback.
It seemed about time to tie up loose ends, so Thee Alcoholics headed into Bear Bites Horse Studio in London, teaming up with Wayne Adams for an all-encompassing live session.
The fittingly named Bear Bites Horse Sessions (Rocket Recordings) is a release worth diving into. The band has never been harder or louder, unleashing a hypnotic vortex that pulls you straight into the eye of the storm.
Noisy, repetitive, and intensely powerful, tracks like “Power” and “Feedback” set the tone. Think sweaty, driving punk in the style of The Stooges, featuring the serrated edge of “The Hole I See” and the grim energy of “Politicians.” There’s even a flash of catchiness on “SE23.” Definitely not easy listening, but deeply captivating.
