About ten years ago, PYPY came together to record Pagan Day. The band, hailing from Montreal’s underground scene, was made up of members from CPC Gangbangs, Red Mass, and Duchess Says. They unleashed an album that straddled the line between punk and psych rock. Soon after, the project was put on hold.
It’s quite remarkable, then, that Sacred Times (Goner) has lost none of the spirit of their debut. The album dives headfirst into garage rock, rumbling, crashing, and with an unmistakable sense of frustration lingering beneath it all.
Despite the rawness, some great melodies still manage to emerge. There’s even a newfound pop sensibility, which comes through on the last two tracks, enhanced by the addition of synths.
Before that, however, fuzz takes center stage, especially on the heavy-hitting “15 Sec.” The fire is there, and so is the catchiness. “Lonely Striped Sock” stands out as an unexpected hit, riding the groove like a beast, maybe even fitting for a future fashion show?
