Lord Buffalo consistently feature desolate, expansive landscapes on their album covers. This suits the sound of the Austin band perfectly, as they blend Americana and rock with passionate intensity.
The cover of “Holus Bolus” (Blues Funeral) depicts a ruin with birds circling above, instantly sparking the imagination. Lord Buffalo once again provides the perfect soundtrack for this imagery.
Lost, endlessly vast, tempestuous, melancholic, yet with a gentle glimmer of hope. The lost souls are not entirely forsaken.
Imagine Nick Cave and Warren Ellis in Grinderman mode, complete with an overdriven violin, accompanied by the desperados from Austin, Texas. The title track grabs you immediately, taking you to rugged terrains. “Slow Drug” then takes us on a bad trip with nightmarish undertones.
Everything is very intense and expansive, yet the album remains compact in duration. Towards the end, they even allow themselves a seven-minute instrumental track. Much more would have been overwhelming.
