Lena Simon and Glenn Van Dyke wanted to do something completely different. They didn’t want to sound like their main bands, La Luz and BOYTOY, so they moved away from the surfy-psychedelic garage rock. To achieve this, they founded Kairos Creature Club. With “KCC” (Greenway), their first LP is now available, and yet it still sounds familiar.
Simon and Van Dyke view their project as an open partnership with artist friends. It’s not a classic band but more of a collective effort. As a result, “KCC” features a blend of 1001 influences. We hear dream pop, industrial, hip hop, electronic music, and the garage rock known from La Luz and BOYTOY.
Admittedly, there is more risk involved. For instance, “Love Song” transitions from light pop into a deep mire. “Self Portrait” turns out dark, raw, and buzzing, while “Exile” is wildly psychedelic.
Minimalist electronic sounds here, catchy indie rock there—it’s a rather experimental record that never becomes too challenging. It’s good that they took this risk, even if it doesn’t overcome too many hurdles.
