Instead of working from home, it’s back to the office: for his new album “Chrome” (Drag City), Ty Segall relies entirely on a collective mindset and the collaborative development of ideas. To achieve this, the Californian brought a band back into the studio, writing songs together with his wife Denée and buddy Matt Yoka.
The band, well-rehearsed, old friends from the scene, features: Ben Boye, Evan Burrows, Mikal Cronin, and Emmett Kelly. Consequently, the playing mood and variety are high. We touch upon punk, post-punk, avant-garde, and country rock. Crazy Horse and Television are cited as influences. We’ll sign off on that.
“Hospital” glides in with an elegantly squeaky groove. “She’s like a hospital to me,” magnificent! The jam stands at the end, which in turn leads into the deeply rumbling “Running to Nowhere.” Time to let loose, with “Black Paint” serving as an early highlight.
“Glass” sets out on a path toward country rock, which is carried over by “Play Cowboys” into a classic Ty Segall track. Although classic Ty Segall doesn’t really exist anymore—anything is possible. But here we get the flattering catchiness that we love so much about him.
Bangers, jams, and sensations—anyone looking for the total freakout can grab the accompanying “Love Fuzz” EP, which lets the rock gallop even more freely. Ty Segall and his men are in top form.
