Friends under the Californian sun: Bert Hoover and Jon Modaff from Hooveriii and Charles Moothart from Fuzz know each other, respect each other, and wanted to try something new for a change. So they formed Primitive Ring — although what they came up with is not exactly groundbreaking. Before long, they found themselves back on familiar ground: groovy, rumbling ’70s rock.
The debut LP (via In the Red Records) leans more toward Moothart’s past work than the sprawling prog explorations of Hooveriii. Those influences do shine through here and there, especially on “Paid,” but before long the amps are cranked back up to 11 and the fuzz takes over again.
For just under three quarters of an hour, the album delivers bone-dry rock ’n’ roll packed with feeling. “Heads Will Roll” comes without a single unnecessary flourish, while the seven-minute track “The Callous Man” provides exactly that — an expansive jam session.
A record for anyone who likes their rock coated in thick vintage varnish. Out of time, yet timeless.
