With the 2021 monster “Chart For The Solution,” Writhing Squares had already said a lot. So, how to proceed from there? Daniel Provenzano and Kevin Nickles retreated to a basement in New Jersey, experimenting in their new studio.
The result, “Mythology” (Trouble In Mind), gathers the shards, trying to build something new from them. But much of the old remains too. There’s the overdriven psych punk, for instance, as heard on “Barbarians” or “LEM” – raw, hard-hitting songs with an unleashed saxophone.
In between, there’s a willingness to improvise, sometimes with saxophone, sometimes with synths in the forefront. Overall, perhaps this is an interim album, simply collecting some good ideas without defining a clear direction. But that’s okay too, because we get gems like the trippy “Acid Rain” or the driving “The Damned Thing.”
