We rarely find ourselves wandering through the strange sonic realms of Black Moth Super Rainbow. Their sound is warped pop, awash in distortion. The songs drift along, nudged in odd directions by bleeps, squeals, and glitchy detours.
It’s been seven years since the last album. Since then, we’ve had TOBACCO music from frontman Tom Fec, but no BMSR. Now, Soft New Magic Dream (Rad Cult) reopens the portal. Cotton candy sounds once again get delightfully overblown, nightmarish vocals float elegantly across the mix. It’s all as it should be—instantly, we’re back home.
Fec takes his time crafting sounds, and yet the resulting tracks share a similar aura. Each one feels like a variant of the same strange dream. Sometimes there’s more frantic energy, sometimes it all slows down into woozy calm.
“Demon’s Glue” dials things back into a tender haze. “The Eyes In Season” is particularly enchanting. And then there are those signature song titles: “Open the Fucking Fantasy,” “Brain Waster”—all part of the BMSR experience. As is the fact that the album was released on MiniDisc (now sold out, of course).
