Their 2021 album Vyvyd brought New Candys increased attention—larger venues, growing crowds. Still, the Italian band didn’t rest on their laurels. Instead, they pressed forward.
Line-up changes and a newfound interest in electronic music have now led to The Uncanny Extravaganza (Fuzz Club)—a clear break in the New Candys discography.
The band’s fifth album blurs the traces of rock, favoring synth-pop textures and cryptic lyrics. Neo-psych elements swirl around stripped-down electronics on “Crime Wave,” while “Aquawish” drifts by in a dreamy haze.
It’s an overall subtle and elusive record. “Night Surfer” stands as a rare moment of driving rock, but by the end—on the techno-leaning “Cagehead”—the shift in direction is clear. That closing track, in many ways, encapsulates the album as a whole.
