New York City may be a party capital, but not the kind that hosts neon-clad revelers in blindingly bright rooms. It’s too cool to really lose control, too meta to engage without a knowing shrug.
So Party Time (Mothland), the debut album by Brooklyn’s TVOD, might feel like false advertising to some. There’s no rowdy bacchanalia here—instead, this is a sharp-tongued, biting, and often introspective record. The soundtrack of choice? Mood-driven, often brooding post-punk.
The title track, saved for last, finally reveals what Party Time means in the band’s world: absurdist chaos, but the kind you can smirk at. No confetti cannons in sight—but the album doesn’t lack hits.
There’s “Car Wreck,” an absolute blast. “MUD” brings gritty, classic punk energy. “Pool House” balances drive and melody with a sense of dislocation, while “Super Spy” brings in the synths.
TVOD have crafted an excellent album for a very particular type of party—where sunglasses and leaning casually against the wall matter more than your dancefloor game.
