Sure, with a name like Arse, the trail leads pretty directly to filthy punk—and that’s exactly where these Australians are rooted. But they bring a twist: hardcore punk with a bit of hip-shaking swagger.
Arse first emerged in 2017 with the Primitive Species EP, offering something fresh. It was chaotic and raw, yet catchy. The drums laid down a stoic, almost techno-like foundation over which the guitar could freely spiral. “Bugger” turned out to be a standout hit.
More releases followed, gradually refining and diversifying their sound. Now it’s all compiled on Complete Arse (Erste Theke Tonträger)—an absolutely worthwhile acquisition.
19 tracks in total, spanning all the way to 2024’s “Kaputt.” A full-spectrum portrait of Arse. From the breezy “Infinite Sedative,” to the hazy, stoned-out “Who Comes Next,” to the shamelessly melodic “Nightshift Blues.” As the press release puts it: “I suppose ARSE is kind of what PISSED JEANS wish they were: great songwriting and musical abilities performed for dumb people.” A surprisingly accurate summary.
