Sometimes, it’s better not to go it alone. Many cooks can indeed create something truly delicious—an idea Henrik Appel embraced for his third solo album, Shadows (PNKSLM). Opening up the creative process to his entire backing band, they collectively crafted a diverse and yearning rock record.
Sketches turned into improvisations, which evolved into fully realized songs. The aim was to land somewhere between Bob Dylan and The Fall, a wide-open space that Appel and his band navigate skillfully.
The result is jazzy garage rock infused with nods to other legends—spacious compositions that leave a lasting impression. Perhaps the album could have used a few more punk bangers to lighten the mood, but what’s here is undeniably captivating.
Highlights include the stunning “Walking Down The Road.” Surrounding it are softer, more deliberate, and absorbing tracks. With “Box Of Metal Emotions,” the Swedish artist showcases his musical insight, transforming a Digital Leather song into a beautifully autumnal rendition.
