Alessio Ferrari can hardly catch a break. With his first album as Upupayāma, he embarked on a journey that led him to the point where the follow-up was conceived. Now, with Mount Elephant (Fuzz Club), he’s once again pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons.
Musically, the Italian artist sticks to what works: Eastern sounds meet Western psych-folk. Ferrari mentions using more fuzz this time and is somewhat surprised by the relaxed outcome. So are we.
The opener, “Moon Needs The Wolf,” is pleasantly inviting and familiar—highly psychedelic but in a good way. It’s a great track, but unfortunately, it just gets varied throughout the album.
There’s no track that breaks out of this spa-like experience. Only in the last two minutes does the guitar get louder. The result is cleansing but also quite sleepy.
