As a band in the midst of their adolescence—14 years of Die Nerven—we’ve grown alongside them and now find ourselves in a unique phase. Their raw early work, which culminated in the masterpiece Fun, evolved into gripping indie rock by the time of their 2022 self-titled album. “More mature nihilism,” as the press release calls it. Still heavy and intense, but not as wild and frantic as before. Like teenagers maturing, more grounded yet still moody, they’re now people who have something to say.
Their sixth album, Wir waren hier (Glitterhouse), was created through close collaboration and attempts to capture their live performance. Improvisations, which the band is so loved for, appear throughout. On the title track, for example, the trio builds up in the final third in a way only they can, or in the closing jam “Disruption,” showcasing their mastery.
The opener “Als ich davonlief” reveals itself as an instant classic. Die Nerven always manage to have that one standout hit on their albums—hats off! It’s buzzing, tight, and fantastic, with a rather catchy chorus.
The album continues with many highlights; “Wie man es nennt” evokes “Nie wieder scheitern” vibes but turns out to be quite a different song. You won’t find a bad record in the band’s oeuvre, and Wir waren hier is no exception.
