Artificial Go is the latest addition to Cincinnati’s thriving punk scene. The raw trio is making their first attempt with Hopscotch Fever (Feel It / Future Shock).
It’s an “attempt” because there’s still a lot that’s undefined here. The LP’s eight short tracks present a variety of ideas ranging from post-punk to art rock and garage pop. Nothing is fully settled; much remains in flux. Yet, the album is a lot of fun.
Mostly, it’s a delightful, jangly sound paired with absurd lyrics—think Dry Cleaning vibes, especially on “On Off.” Then, there’s a fantastic ’60s folk rock number with “Walk Like a Dog.”
It’s poppy, but also quite quirky. “Reality Does” is a challenging yet intriguing track that dips cool 2000s garage rock into a bath of dream pop. It keeps things exciting!
