It’s quite the coincidence that OSEES and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are both releasing new albums on the same day. Two bands from different continents with different foundations, yet sharing the same approach: never recording the same album twice. Always something new, with no genre off-limits.
Both bands are attempting a bit of a reset with their latest works. OSEES, for instance, have removed all guitars on “SORCS 80” (Castle Face). The album is built on samples and enriched with saxophones. What the Californians have produced here couldn’t be stranger.
Electro meets hardcore punk shouts, accompanied by a cacophony of clattering and rumbling. The songs range from agitated and intense (“Look At The Sky”) to downright sexy (“Also The Gorilla…”). All of this is wrapped in the signature bright and swirling OSEES psychedelia.
“Termination Officer” transports us to a liminal space where ’80s glam rock is still cool. There’s a Big Beat Brass attack in many places, along with the familiar light-footedness. It’s an album that feels both fresh and yet somehow familiar.
