The strange and unique world of The Drin: Currently, the sextet embeds sleepy post-punk in eerie scenarios. Swampy and steamy like the southern USA, yet no less hostile, a fact they try to mask behind tired eyes.
“Elude the Torch” (Feel It / Future Shock) is their fourth release in four years, and as with every release, it must be said: it’s the band’s best album yet. Very similar to 2023’s “Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom,” but more consistent and less screechy.
Super catchy and psychedelic, always stoic and lost. “Bascinet,” an incredible opener, is followed by the even better title track. Psych rock, but also somehow post-punk, presented by an orchestra galloping forward.
With The Drin, just about anything goes: folk, blues, glam, lo-fi art pop, dub. This time, they’ve set aside rock ‘n’ roll. Too wild; they’re sticking with their thick, muddy sound. And that’s symbolic too: a sound you can’t quite escape from.
Every song feels like an album closer, gently winding down, marking the end. But then it continues, and you should definitely stay tuned. Otherwise, you’ll miss the next banger.
