With their 2019 debut album “Floating Being,” Earth Tongue quickly became an insider tip. Their formidable fuzz rock is catchy and escalating at the same time. Now, Gussie Larkin and Ezra Simons are back with “Great Haunting” (In The Red).
The duo from New Zealand hasn’t changed much. Why would they, since everything worked so well? The new record is again crowned with buzzing heavy psych, reminiscent of the band Fuzz and also drawing influence from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
Earth Tongue often lean into their heavy sound, but they shine particularly well when they groove elegantly. They master the madness, as shown in “Bodies Dissolve Tonight!,” a breakneck track. At times, the start can be a bit too hectic, and by the end, it can lack variety.
Delicate space excursions, which could have been a bit more prominent. Overall, they could take a handful more experiments to make it truly great.
