Responding to life’s tragedies with a hug for the world: La Luz‘s frontwoman Shana Cleveland addresses her breast cancer diagnosis on the new album “News of the Universe” (Sub Pop) not with grim determination, but with love.
It’s a strange world, but we take it as it is. La Luz itself underwent significant changes, with several lineup shifts during the recording process. Nevertheless, they have managed to produce a very cohesive album.
The Californian band originated in lo-fi garage surf but has been leaning toward indie rock for some time. On the new album, they get a bit more psychedelic again. Surf elements flash here and there, and there are fuzzy moments as well. However, what dominates could be called space psych pop.
It’s quirky yet atmospheric. Delicate and sensitive, but also otherworldly. Dreamy, but not lulling, as La Luz always reserves the right to break into a solid rock part.
A great album that offers comfort. With fantastic tracks like the captivating “Good Luck With Your Secret” and the funky “Blue Moth Cloud Shadow.” Successfully overcoming all adversity.
