What might be going on inside Nolan Potter’s head? Let’s find out with his new album “The Perils of Being Trapped Inside a Head” (Try Hard / Spaceflight). Potter has built a solid reputation over the years for psychedelic garage rock. Sometimes he releases music with the addition of “Nightmare Band,” and sometimes completely solo.
On the new album, Texan Dillon Fernandez joins Potter. They share a history together in the experimental rock band Lake Of Fire. There are plenty of experiments on “The Perils of Being Trapped Inside a Head” as well.
It’s not quite garage rock, nor is it psych pop. It’s trippy, full of twists. We stumble from shimmering pop on “Dig Me As I Am” to glam rock, then onto the whimsical “The Mold That Grows on Harvey,” and finally to folk.
So, this is what’s going on in Potter’s mind: a peculiar mishmash. Songs oscillate between solid rock and intricate pop. Expansive yet nuanced, and above all, beautifully polished. Like a ride in the yellow submarine.
