From Population II, we’ve already received several releases that took quite different paths within the realm of psych rock. Sometimes they leaned towards prog, other times they rocked more boldly. The new EP “Serpent Échelle” (Bonsound) also attempts something new.
The band from Québec gets deeply entangled in mystical sounds but also packs more punch. The opener, “Hélène,” for example, oscillates between relaxed flowing psych rock and pure chaos.
“R.B.” rocks along pretty coolly. Great track! “Le Serpent” presents itself as psychedelically jammy, while the intersection of straightforward and far-out is represented by “Comme tu le souhaites (Ding Dong).”
What was a bit taxing in LP length lately ignites quite well over the four tracks. We’re curious to see where the band goes from here.
